ΑΝΑΚΟΙΝΩΣΗ ΤΥΠΟΥ
Η ΑΛΛΗΛΕΓΓΥΗ ΓΙΑ ΤΗ ΔΙΑΣΩΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΜΕΛΚΟΝΙΑΝ
Η Αλληλεγγύη καταδικάζει κάθε προσπάθεια εκποίησης -πώλησης -καταστροφής του ιστορικού χώρου και του ιστορικού κτιρίου στον οποίο βρίσκεται το περίφημο Αρμενικό Σχολείο Μελκονιάν της Λευκωσίας.
Στο Σχολείο Μελκονιάν φοίτησαν χιλιάδες παιδιά από τα διασωθέντα εκ της τουρκικής θηριωδίας και συνέχισε την λειτουργία του για δεκαετίες.
Από αυτό αποφοίτησαν χιλιάδες Αρμενόπουλα και δέθηκαν άρρηκτα με την Κύπρο. Το Σχολείο Μελκονιάν είναι ένας Παγκόσμιος Ανθρωπιστικός Φάρος, που καταυγάζει την Αρμενική και Κυπριακή Ιστορία και τον Αρμενισμό στο σύνολο του. Καλούμε την διαχειριστική επιτροπή να αρθεί στο ύψος των περιστάσεων και να μην εκποιήσει την Ιστορία του τόπου μας.
Το κτίριο του σχολείου Μελκονιάν μπορεί να λειτουργήσει ξανά ή να φιλοξενήσει Αρμενικό Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο, Κέντρο Μελέτης των Γενοκτονιών, την Αρμενική Πρεσβεία, το Δημοτικό Σχολείο που ακόμη λειτουργεί, μπορεί ακόμη να μετατραπεί σε Τμήμα Αρμενικών Σπουδών ενός Πανεπιστημίου.
Καλούμε τον κάθε πατριώτη να ξεσηκωθεί και να αγωνιστεί για την διάσωση του σχολείου.
Προς τούτο επισυνάπτουμε τοποθέτηση Αρμενίων συμπατριωτών επί του ζητήματος:
The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) headquartered in New York, wants to shut down the historic Melkonian Institute for good and sell the land it sits on to developers. This is an insult to the Melkonian brothers who founded this unique institute, to its thousands of alumni from all over the world, to the Armenian people and to the memory of the orphans of the Armenian Genocide in Turkey who escaped the massacres and found refuge in the Melkonian institute. And what a betrayal to the AGBU self-declared goal that it preserves and promotes the Armenian identity and heritage through educational, cultural and humanitarian programs. In the case of the Melkonian institute the AGBU aims to make tens of millions from the sale of its prime property for profit, while destroying a historic monument and memorial and deprives current and future generations from benefiting from its educational and cultural programs. The New York based AGBU should not be allowed to prevent the Melkonian institute in Cyprus from operating again and becoming once again a prestigious international Educational and cultural Centre. The European Union, UNESCO and other world organizations as well as the Armenian people worldwide should join the Cyprus government and the Armenian community of Cyprus in their struggle to save, preserve and revive this moving memorial from the predators in New York who want to destroy it for money. Please join the fight in any way you can to stop them.
